Abraham's Dream

EDITORS COMMENTS
-- Coming events cast their shadows before: This powerful political print captures President Abraham Lincoln's anguish and fear of defeat in the 1864 election. The image, which probably emerged late in the campaign, depicts a tormented Lincoln lying on a bed in the White House, his face contorted in terror as he is visited by a nightmarish vision. At the door of the White House stands Columbia or Liberty, a symbol of the United States, wielding the severed head of a black man. She kicks Lincoln away in disgust, sending him fleeing to the left, wearing a Scotsman's plaid cap and cape. The dream alludes to Lincoln's belief in the prophetic significance of dreams and the impending doom he sensed for his re-election bid. The Scotsman's plaid cap and long military cloak recall an incident from 1861, when Lincoln disguised himself in such attire to travel to Washington for his first inauguration, fearing an assassination attempt. On the right side of the print, General George B. McClellan, Lincoln's Democratic opponent, ascends the steps to the White House, carrying a valise with his initials on it. The image conveys the looming threat of McClellan's candidacy and the potential for a change in leadership during a critical moment in the nation's history. The print, titled "Abraham's Dream" -- Coming events cast their shadows before, is a poignant reminder of the high stakes of the 1864 election and the profound impact that the outcome would have on the future of the United States.
