This stunning 15th-century altarpiece, known as the Main Altarpiece or Retablo Mayor, is a masterpiece of Italian Gothic art, housed in the Old Cathedral of Salamanca, Spain. Painted between 1433 and 1443 by the Italian artist Dello Delli (1404-1466), also known as Niccolò di ser Gerardo or Niccolò di Firenze, this work of art is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of the Castile and Leon region during the Middle Ages. The altarpiece, which occupies the apse of the cathedral, is a complex composition that depicts the Last Judgement, with Jesus Christ enthroned in the center, surrounded by the Virgin Mary and various angels. The scene is filled with intricate details, including the representation of good and evil angels playing musical instruments, such as trumpets, and the presence of St. Sanson and St. Florentino, two local saints.
