EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Ebenezer Sibly's Universal System of Natural History published in 1794-1796, showcases four distinctive species of marmots and beavers native to North America. The image features the Beaver (Castor canadensis), with its large, flat tail and distinctive webbed hind feet, which are expertly rendered in intricate detail. The Alpine Marmot (Marmota marmota), or George Marmot, is depicted with its bushy tail, short legs, and rounded ears, as it basks in the sun on a rocky outcrop. The Bobak Marmot (Marmota bobak), or Edwards' Marmot, is shown with its long, slender body and shorter, less rounded ears, while the Earless Marmot (Marmota monax), or Earless Groundhog, is illustrated without ears, as suggested by its name. These marmots were meticulously drawn and engraved to provide an accurate and detailed record of their physical characteristics for scientific study and appreciation. Ebenezer Sibly's Universal System of Natural History was a groundbreaking work that covered the three natural worlds of fauna, flora, and geology, making it an essential resource for naturalists and scholars of the time.
