This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Ebenezer Sibly's Universal System of Natural History published in 1794-1796, showcases four distinctive species of marmots and beavers native to North America. The Alpine Marmot (Marmota marmota), or George Marmot, is depicted with its bushy tail, short legs, and rounded ears, as it basks in the sun on a rocky outcrop.
