La Bête du Gevaudan," or the Beast of Gevaudan, is a legendary creature that terrorized the French region of Gevaudan in the late 18th century. This historical print, titled "Bête Du Gevaudan, The Hunting of the Beast," depicts the momentous event when the beast was finally hunted down and killed in 1767. The image captures the intense scene of the hunt, with hunters on horseback, guns at the ready, and hounds baying in pursuit of the beast. The creature itself is shown in the background, a fearsome and monstrous figure with the body of a large wolf or bear, but with the head of a human or a horse. This grotesque amalgamation of animal and human features is a common characteristic of many folkloric beasts and reflects the fear and uncertainty that gripped the people of Gevaudan during this time. The legend of the Beast of Gevaudan began in 1764 when reports of attacks on livestock and humans started to surface. The creature was said to be responsible for the deaths of over 100 people and countless livestock. The people of Gevaudan lived in constant fear, and the local authorities were at a loss as to how to stop the beast. It wasn't until the arrival of the King's huntsman, Jean-Charles Marc Antoine Marquise de Bellegarde, that the beast was finally hunted down. According to the legend, the beast was lured into a trap and killed by the huntsman and his team in the village of Devigne on December 19, 1767. The body of the beast was never found, but the people of Gevaudan were relieved that the terror had finally come to an end. This print is a testament to the historical significance of the Beast of Gevaudan and the bravery of the huntsman who brought an end to the terror. It is a reminder of the power of folklore and the enduring impact that legendary creatures can have on the collective imagination.
