Britain?s Second Front roads are widened

Photograph: Britain?s Second Front roads are widened. Important: these pictures must not be published until D-Day. Many roads in many parts of Britain have been extensively widened and bridges built in order to carry the extra military traffic the Second Front made necessary. This work is carried out by both civilians and military engineers. In many cases, narrow and dangerous roads have been straightened. Where large trees were an encumbrance, they were torn down. This was done at high speed by the most [missing]. Shows an old wooden bridge being replaced by a modern reinforced concrete one to carry the weight of heavier military traffic who will use it for the Second Front. Picture issued April (?) 1944. British Official photograph BH 23391. From a collection of 33 contact prints of British official photographs mounted on card with original associated typescript captions. Photographs chiefly relate to D-Day and the Battle of Normandy, 1944. Some of the captions are incomplete. Associated with D-Day and Operation OVERLORD, World War Two, North West Europe (1944-1945) 1944 and the Normandy Breakout, World War Two, North West Europe (1944-1945) 1944. Date: 1944

EDITORS COMMENTS
"Britain's Second Front Roads Widened: A Preparation for D-Day (Photograph: Britain's Second Front roads are widened. This image is to be held in confidence until D-Day. The roads of Britain have undergone extensive widening and bridge-building to accommodate the increased military traffic necessitated by the Second Front. The work is being carried out by both civilian and military engineering teams. Narrow and hazardous roads have been straightened, and large trees, an obstruction to the heavier military vehicles, have been felled at a rapid pace. This photograph shows the replacement of an old wooden bridge with a modern reinforced concrete one, capable of carrying the weight of the military traffic bound for the Second Front. Date: April 1944. British Official photograph BH 23391. Originally part of a collection of 33 contact prints of British official photographs mounted on card with original associated typescript captions. The majority of the photographs relate to D-Day and the Battle of Normandy, 1944. Some captions are incomplete. Associated with D-Day and Operation OVERLORD, World War Two, North West Europe (1944-1945)." This photograph is a poignant reminder of the extensive preparations made in Britain for the D-Day landings and the Battle of Normandy during World War Two in Europe in 1944. The image shows the replacement of an old wooden bridge with a modern reinforced concrete one, symbolizing the transformation of infrastructure to support the heavy military traffic required for the Second Front. The work was carried out by both civilian and military engineering teams, and the urgency of the project is evident in the felling of large trees and the straightening of narrow and hazardous roads. The image is a vital historical record of the logistical efforts made in support of the Allied invasion of Europe, which ultimately led to the defeat of Nazi Germany.
