British fighter plane, WWI by George Ranstead
A British single seat fighter plane up in the sky during aerial combat (though no other planes seems to be about). Note the exploding shells all around. Drawn by George Ranstead, an amateur artist of the Great War. Ranstead was one of many soldiers of WWI who took up drawing as a hobby. His subjects range from wartime humour to pictures of pretty girls and are clearly influenced by images in the illustrated magazines of the period.
circa 1916

EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the chaotic skies of the Western Front during World War I, a lone British fighter plane soars valiantly, engaged in aerial combat. The year is circa 1916, and the scene is captured masterfully by the unassuming hand of George Ranstead, an amateur artist and soldier of the Great War. Ranstead's artwork, a testament to the courage and determination of the men who took to the skies to defend their countries, is brought to life in this evocative postcard. The plane, a single-seater, is shown in the midst of battle, with exploding shells all around. The intensity of the moment is palpable, yet there is a sense of focus and determination in the pilot's stance, as he expertly maneuvers his aircraft through the tumultuous air. The vibrant colors and intricate details of Ranstead's drawing transport us back in time, offering a glimpse into the heart of the conflict. Ranstead's artistic talents were not limited to the battlefield. His subjects ranged from wartime humor to pictures of pretty girls, all influenced by the images in the illustrated magazines of the period. This postcard, however, stands out as a poignant reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of the pilots who took to the skies during the First World War. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of the importance of preserving the stories and art of those who lived through history's most defining moments. George Ranstead's work, like this postcard, serves as a testament to the human spirit and the power of art to capture and convey the essence of a time and place.
