EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative illustration, titled "City of Atlanta, Ga. no. 2," offers a glimpse into the aftermath of the destructive fire that ravaged Atlanta, Georgia in 1864. The image, created in 1866, depicts a street corner in the heart of the city, where a once-grand bank building lies in ruins. The charred remains of the bank contrast starkly with the intact neighboring buildings and shops, their facades untouched by the flames. The scene is further punctuated by the presence of covered wagons parked along the street. These wagons may have been brought in to transport goods or supplies, or they could be the homes of refugees displaced by the fire. The people of Atlanta were left to rebuild their city from the ashes, and this illustration serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and determination required in the face of such devastation. Atlanta, a major commercial hub and railroad center, had been a strategic target during the American Civil War. Union General William T. Sherman ordered the city to be burned on November 15, 1864, in an effort to weaken the Confederate war effort. The fire spread rapidly, destroying much of the city's infrastructure and leaving thousands of residents homeless. Despite the destruction, Atlanta was quickly rebuilt, and by the late 1860s, it had once again become a thriving center of commerce and industry. This illustration, with its intriguing details and historical significance, offers a fascinating window into the past and the indomitable spirit of the people of Atlanta.
