EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print showcases Kyrle Bellew (1855-1911), the renowned English actor, in his leading role as the seductive and enigmatic character from George Broadhurst's play, "The Crimson Alibi." The image, which dates back to 1919, was first produced at the Strand Theatre in London, and later toured to the Lyceum Theatre in Sheffield in 1920, with Bellew and the original cast, including A.E. George. Bellew's portrayal of the mysterious and alluring woman in "The Crimson Alibi" is depicted in this sketch, with her wavy, black hair cascading down her shoulders, her lips adorned with bold red lipstick, and a seductive bow tied around her neck. The crimson ribbon adds an air of mystery and intrigue to the image, further enhancing the captivating allure of the character. Despite the misleading caption below the image, which incorrectly identifies Bellew as a woman, there is no doubt that his magnetic stage presence and ability to embody the complexities of this female role left audiences spellbound. This evocative portrait offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the talent and charisma of one of the most celebrated actors of his time.
