Daniel interprets the writing on the wall

In the Old Testament Book of Daniel, duringt a banquet hosted by King Belshazzar, mysterious writing (" Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin" ) appeared on the wall, written by a disembodied hand. The visionary Daniel was summoned and interpreted this message as signalling the imminent end of the Babylonian kingdom. That night, his prophesy was fulfilled as Belshazzar was killed and the Persians sacked the capital city.

Babylonian Babylonians Banquet Biblical Bringing Daniel Destruction Doom Feast Interpret Interpretation Interpreting Meal Prophet Testament Belshazzar Interprets Mene Prophesy

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th century illustration depicts the biblical scene of Daniel interpreting the writing on the wall during King Belshazzar's banquet. The Old Testament story unfolds as the mysterious words "Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin" appear on the palace wall, written by an unseen hand. The visionary Daniel, a prophet and interpreter of dreams, is summoned to decipher the cryptic message. With deep concentration, Daniel studies the writing and reveals its ominous meaning: "Mene" meaning numbered, "Tekel" meaning weighed, and "Upharsin" meaning divided. Daniel prophesies that the words signify the imminent end of the Babylonian kingdom and the coming doom for Belshazzar. That very night, Belshazzar was killed and the Persians sacked the capital city, fulfilling Daniel's prophecy. This powerful illustration, from the Reuben Luke Collection at Mary Evans Picture Library, beautifully captures the dramatic tension and historical significance of this biblical story.
