EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite chromolithograph by Gillot, based on an illustration by Edouard Garnier from The Soft Paste Porcelain of Sevres, published in Paris in 1891, showcases a stunning selection of Dauphin porcelain pieces. The centerpiece of the image is a delicate cup and saucer set, adorned with intricately painted dolphins swimming amidst vibrant flowers. The cup's handle is shaped like a reine, or queen, a common motif in Dauphin porcelain. Surrounding the cup and saucer are various other porcelain pieces, including a bulidon, or vase, with a playful scene of a partridge eye (oeil-de-perdrix) and its young one (son) frolicking among the flowers. A second vase, also decorated with dolphins and flowers, sits atop a basket. The Dauphin porcelain, produced in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, was renowned for its soft paste and vibrant colors. This style of porcelain was inspired by Chinese and Japanese ceramics, as well as the rococo and neoclassical movements. The porcelain was often decorated with scenes from nature, mythology, and the animal kingdom. This illustration provides a glimpse into the rich history of Dauphin porcelain and the artistry of the Maison Quantin, a renowned Parisian porcelain manufacturer during this period. The intricate details and vibrant colors captured in this chromolithograph serve as a testament to the beauty and craftsmanship of this historic porcelain.
