Born in 1803 in the village of Kastania, in the Peloponnese region of Greece, Kalergi rose to become a key figure in the Greek War of Independence (1821-1829). Kalergi's early life was marked by hardship and struggle. He was orphaned at a young age and was forced to leave home to find work. He eventually became a sailor, traveling to various parts of the Mediterranean and the Middle East. It was during this time that he became exposed to the injustices and oppression inflicted upon the Greek population by the Ottoman rulers. Inspired by the ideals of freedom and self-determination, Kalergi returned to Greece and joined the revolutionary forces. He quickly distinguished himself as a brave and capable leader, participating in several key battles and earning the respect of his comrades. One of his most notable achievements was the successful defense of the fortress of Acrocorinth in 1826. Despite his military successes, Kalergi's life was not without tragedy. He was captured by the Ottoman forces in 1827 and was sentenced to death. However, he managed to escape and continued to fight for Greek independence until his death in 1867.
