EDITORS COMMENTS
Dom Perignon, a renowned French Benedictine monk and cellarer, is depicted in this photograph from the 1910s. Born in 1638, Perignon spent his life in the Abbey of Hautvillers, located in the Champagne region of France. Contrary to popular belief, Perignon did not invent sparkling champagne; however, he is credited with refining the traditional wine production methods in the region. Perignon's plump, bald figure with a tonsure is a testament to his religious devotion as a monk. He is often depicted wearing the traditional Benedictine habit, which includes a brown robe and a white cord. In this image, Perignon is shown holding a bottle of wine, symbolizing his role as cellarer, the person responsible for the care and management of the abbey's wine cellar. The Abbey of Hautvillers, nestled among the rolling hills of Champagne, was the perfect setting for Perignon's groundbreaking work in wine production. He is known to have experimented with various techniques, such as the second fermentation in the bottle, which eventually led to the creation of sparkling champagne. However, it was not until the late 17th and 18th centuries that this method became popular, long after Perignon's time. This photograph, part of The Roseries Collection from Mary Evans Prints Online, captures the essence of Dom Perignon as a pivotal figure in the history of Champagne wine production. His legacy continues to inspire and intrigue wine enthusiasts around the world, making him a symbol of the rich cultural heritage of the Champagne region.
