Pictured Murren in the Swiss Alps, being taught to ski by Mr De Lapp. The Tatler, which printed this picture, commented that she was also receiving lessons from Prince Antoine Bibesco, and says, rather obsequiously, she will doubtless, having a talent for games, exceed in this as in other things. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from 1912, the Duchess of Westminster, Constance Edwina Cornwallis-West (later Mrs. James Fitzpatrick Lewes), is seen gracefully learning the art of skiing in the picturesque Swiss Alps of Murren. The Duchess, who was the first wife of the 2nd Duke of Westminster, was an aristocrat known for her elegance and refined taste. The image captures the Duchess in her winter attire, bundled up against the chill, as she receives instruction from her ski instructor, Mr. De Lapp. The Tatler, a prominent society magazine of the time, reported that the Duchess was also receiving lessons from Prince Antoine Bibesco, a renowned skiing enthusiast. The magazine's obsequious commentary suggests that the Duchess, with her natural talent for games, would undoubtedly excel in skiing as she had in other pursuits. The scene is set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Swiss Alps, with their snow-capped peaks and pristine winter wonderland. The Duchess's expression conveys a sense of determination and focus as she practices her new skill, her eyes fixed on the horizon. The photograph is a testament to the aristocracy's love for winter sports and their penchant for embracing new experiences, even in the most challenging of environments. This evocative image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us to a time when the elite of society sought refuge in the mountains to enjoy the thrill of skiing and the camaraderie of the great outdoors. It is a reminder of the enduring appeal of winter sports and the joy of learning new skills, no matter one's social standing.
