EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts an Eastern Grey Kangaroo, Macropus giganteus, in its natural habitat. The image is taken from Frederic Cuvier's Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals, published in Paris, France, in 1816. The illustration was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was executed by Miss Coignet, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The Eastern Grey Kangaroo is the most common and widely distributed kangaroo species in Australia. They are characterized by their grey fur, large ears, powerful hind legs, and long, muscular tail, which acts as a balance and support when they hop. Kangaroos are marsupials, meaning that they carry their young in a pouch. The young, called joeys, are born underdeveloped and continue to grow and develop inside the pouch for several months. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving captures the essence of the Eastern Grey Kangaroo's powerful and graceful form. The use of handcoloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true masterpiece of natural history illustration. The engraving not only showcases the natural beauty of the Eastern Grey Kangaroo but also provides a glimpse into the rich history of zoological illustration.
