EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 144 from John James Audubon's esteemed work, "Birds of America," showcases the Acadian Flycatcher, Empidonax virescens, in stunning detail. This exquisite illustration, part of the original double elephant folio published between 1831 and 1834, was engraved, printed, and hand-colored by R. Havell (& Son) in London. The Acadian Flycatcher is depicted perched on a branch of Laurus nobilis, or bay laurel, with a ripe berry in its beak. The bird's vibrant green plumage is brilliantly rendered through the aquatint technique, which allows for a rich, tonal depth and intricate detail. The Acadian Flycatcher is a small, agile bird belonging to the family Magnoliidae and the order Laurales. It is a New World flycatcher, with a wide distribution across eastern North America. This bird is a member of the angiosperms, a group of flowering plants that includes dicotyledons, such as the Lauraceae family to which the bay laurel belongs. The Acadian Flycatcher is shown in the act of flying, its wings outstretched, and its long, curved beak poised to capture insects in mid-air. The image captures the bird's grace and agility, as well as the beauty of the angiosperm plant it perches upon. Audubon's "Birds of America" is considered a landmark work in the history of natural history illustration. The series showcases over 435 life-size plates of North American birds, and is renowned for its exceptional quality and accuracy. This plate of the Acadian Flycatcher is a testament to Audubon's dedication to documenting the natural world and to the skill of the engravers, printers, and colorists who brought his vision to life.
