1837 Acari Andrew Believed Chemical Course Created Crosse Electro Experiments Folk Lore

EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Reverend John Tyndall Crosse, a Victorian-era scientist, holding a small glass slide bearing an unusual insect specimen. Known as the Crosse's Acari or Crosse's Insect, this creature was believed to have been spontaneously created during the course of Crosse's electro-chemical experiments in 1837. Crosse, an Anglican clergyman with a keen interest in science, was conducting experiments in his home laboratory when he noticed the appearance of this peculiar insect. He described the event as inadvertent, as he had not intentionally set out to create such a creature. The insect, which bore a cross-like marking on its back, was unlike any other known species and generated significant buzz in the scientific community of the time. The exact nature of Crosse's experiments remains unclear, but it is believed that he was investigating the effects of electricity on organic matter. Some speculate that the insect may have been the result of an electrical discharge that altered the DNA of a pre-existing organism, while others suggest that it could have been a previously unknown species that was somehow brought into existence through the experiment. Despite the controversy and skepticism that surrounded the discovery, Crosse's Acari became a popular subject in folklore and was often cited as evidence of the wonders of science and the natural world. This photograph, taken decades later, serves as a reminder of the mysterious and awe-inspiring discoveries that can emerge from the most unexpected of experiments.
