EDITORS COMMENTS
Frederic William Farrar (1831-1903): A Prominent Theological Writer and Chaplain to the Commons This portrait captures the distinguished figure of Frederic William Farrar, a renowned theological writer and Chaplain to the Commons. Born in 1831, Farrar dedicated his life to the study and dissemination of religious thought, leaving an indelible mark on the intellectual landscape of the late 19th century. Farrar's impressive career began with his appointment as a fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, in 1855. He later became a Canon of Westminster Abbey and a Prebendary of St. Paul's Cathedral. In 1860, Farrar was ordained as a deacon and priest in the Church of England, and in 1864, he was appointed as the Chaplain to the House of Commons. Farrar's literary contributions were numerous and influential. He authored several books, including "Ecce Homo," a meditation on the life of Christ, and "The Idolatry of the Temporal Power," a critique of the role of the Church in politics. His work was widely read and admired, earning him a reputation as one of the leading theological writers of his time. But Farrar's legacy extends beyond the realm of theology. His daughter, Maud, married Bernard Montgomery, who would go on to become a field marshal in the British Army during World War II. Montgomery's military prowess and strategic brilliance played a crucial role in the Allied victory in Europe, making Farrar the grandfather of one of the most celebrated military leaders in British history. This evocative image of Farrar, taken by the renowned photographic studio Vanity Fair, captures the intellectual depth and spiritual gravitas of a man whose influence on both religious thought and military history continues to resonate today.
