The General Strike - civil constabulary reserve 1926

A unit of new recruits to the new civil constabulary reserve, equipped with steel helmets, truncheons and armlets, leaving headquarters at Buckingham Gate in London during the General Strike. In support of a strike by coal miners over the issue of threatened wage cuts, the Trades Union Congress called a General Strike in early May 1926. The strike only involved certain key industrial sectors (docks, electricity, gas, railways) but, in the face of well-organised government emergency measures and lack of real public support, it collapsed after nine days

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment during the General Strike of 1926 in London. The image shows a group of new recruits to the Civil Constabulary Reserve, dressed in uniforms complete with steel helmets, truncheons, and armlets, leaving headquarters at Buckingham Gate. The General Strike, called by the Trades Union Congress in support of coal miners facing threatened wage cuts, involved key industrial sectors such as docks, electricity, gas, and railways. However, the strike, which only lasted nine days, was met with well-organized government emergency measures and lacked significant public support. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the tense atmosphere during this historic event in British history. The General Strike of 1926 marked a turning point in labor relations and the balance of power between workers and employers. This image, taken by the Illustrated London News Ltd and sourced from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a unique glimpse into the past and the challenges faced during this period of industrial unrest in the 1920s.
