EDITORS COMMENTS
Great Statue of Buddha Daibutsu at Kamakura, Japan (circa 1900) The Great Statue of Buddha, or Daibutsu, in Kamakura, Japan, is a magnificent and historic representation of Amida Buddha, the Buddha of Infinite Light and Infinite Life. This iconic statue is located at Kotokuin Temple, which was originally built in 1252, but the current statue dates back to the late 13th or early 14th century. The statue is approximately 11.3 meters (37 feet) high and is made of bronze and indoor copper. The Daibutsu is depicted in the seated position, with his legs crossed in the lotus position, and his right hand resting on his lap in the "dhyana mudra," a gesture symbolizing meditation and contemplation. His left hand is open, inviting devotees to receive his blessings. The statue's serene expression and the intricate details of its clothing and ornaments reflect the masterful craftsmanship of the Buddhist artisans of the time. The Great Statue of Buddha at Kamakura is a significant cultural and historical landmark in Japan. It has survived numerous natural disasters, including earthquakes and typhoons, and has been restored several times throughout history. The statue's resilience and enduring presence are a testament to the deep spiritual and cultural significance of Buddhism in Japan. The temple complex surrounding the Daibutsu is also home to several other historic structures, including a large bronze bell, which is rung during special ceremonies. Visitors to the temple can experience the peaceful atmosphere and the rich history of Buddhism in Japan by exploring the temple grounds and taking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.
