This evocative photograph captures a moment in time during the construction of the Great Western Railway (GWR) line in Treffgarne, Pembrokeshire, South Wales, in the early 1900s. Ten determined navvies, dressed in their flat caps and heavy work clothes, are seen laboriously working on the Nant Y Coy cutting. The rugged terrain of the Welsh landscape is evident in the background, with the steep incline of the cutting providing a challenging backdrop to their manual labor. Among the group is James Spires, whose tragic story adds a poignant note to this historical image. Sadly, Spires was killed on the very same line in 1905, while working on the Nant Y Coy cutting. His fellow navvies, their faces etched with the physical and mental toll of their arduous work, continue to labor in the shadow of the loss.
