EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Harry Lawrence Oakley (1882-1960), a renowned silhouette artist, is seen in his studio on Llandudno pier, meticulously cutting a silhouette portrait. The image, taken around 1950, captures Oakley in the midst of his artistic process, with a focused expression and a pair of scissors poised in his hand. Silhouettes were a popular art form during the 19th and early 20th centuries, and Oakley's intricately crafted portraits were in high demand for posters, magazines illustrations, and advertising. However, this photograph reveals the more personal side of Oakley's work, as he created thousands of custom portraits throughout his lifetime. The studio setting, with its seaside backdrop and examples of Oakley's work displayed on the walls, adds to the charm of the image. Among the silhouettes on display is a striking likeness of Sir Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts, which was popular enough to be sold as postcards for just two pence each. Llandudno was a favorite destination for Oakley, and he returned to the seaside resort each summer to set up his studio. The town's picturesque pier and vibrant atmosphere provided the perfect backdrop for his artistic endeavors, and the demand for his silhouettes ensured a steady stream of customers. This photograph offers a glimpse into the world of a talented artist and the enduring appeal of a traditional art form. Oakley's silhouettes continue to captivate viewers today, serving as a reminder of a bygone era and the simple joy of a beautifully crafted portrait.
