EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored lithograph depicts a group of Botocudo men from Eastern Brazil, showcasing their distinctive features and traditional attire. The Botocudo people, also known as the Botocudos or Botocudo-Guarani, were an indigenous tribe inhabiting the eastern part of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais and the western part of the state of Espírito Santo. They were renowned for their unique customs, including the wearing of wooden disks in their ears and lips, and the mummification of their deceased leaders. The men in this image are adorned with various ornaments, including feathers, shells, and beads. Their lips and ears are pierced and stretched to accommodate the large wooden disks, a practice that was believed to enhance their physical strength and attractiveness. The mummified head at the bottom left of the image adds an intriguing element to the composition, emphasizing the Botocudo's reverence for their ancestors and their belief in the continuity of life beyond death. This lithograph is taken from Friedrich Wilhelm Goedsche's Complete Gallery of Peoples in True Pictures, published in Meissen, Germany, between 1835 and 1840. Goedsche was a prominent ethnographer and anthropologist of his time, and his work was instrumental in documenting the diverse cultures and customs of various peoples around the world. This image offers a glimpse into the rich and complex history of the Botocudo people, providing valuable insights into their unique traditions and way of life.
