Our Heroes March by Max Werner

Our Heroes March by Max Werner.Colour lithograph music cover, artist unknown, 1900.Published by Phillips and Oliver, London, 1900.Relating to 1st Earl, Frederick Sleigh Roberts and 1st Earl, Horatio Herbert Kitchener.Associated with the Boer War (1899-1902).Roberts and Kitchener, successive Commanders-in-Chief in South Africa during the Boer War, were men of sharply contrasting character. Kindly, unassuming and courteous, Roberts was popularly known as ?Bobs?. His small stature and elderly appearance - he was 68 when he left South Africa in 1900 - probably increased the veneration which he received from both the public and soldiers. Kitchener, in contrast, although possessed of considerable organisational skills, and respected as a successful colonial campaigner, found it difficult to delegate, or work as part of a team, and his austere demeanour did nothing to advance his personal popularity. Roberts? heroic image remained unsullied at the end of the war; blame for its darkest aspects fell on Kitchener, Date: 1900

Our Heroes March

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating color lithograph music cover, created by Max Werner and published by Phillips and Oliver in London in 1900. The image is a poignant representation of two pivotal figures during the Boer War (1899-1902): Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, and Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener. Roberts, affectionately known as "Bobs," was a kind, unassuming, and courteous leader, who gained immense popularity among the public and soldiers. His small stature and elderly appearance, as he was 68 when he departed from South Africa in 1900, only added to the reverence he received. In contrast, Kitchener, a man of considerable organizational skills and a successful colonial campaigner, struggled with delegation and teamwork. His austere demeanor did little to endear him to the public. Despite his accomplishments, Kitchener's personal popularity waned in comparison to Roberts. The image captures the two commanders, Roberts and Kitchener, standing side by side, leading their troops in a march. Roberts, with his kind and approachable disposition, is depicted as a father figure, looking out for his soldiers with concern. Kitchener, on the other hand, is portrayed as a stern and determined leader, focused on the mission at hand. The Boer War marked a significant period in British military history, and the contrasting characters of Roberts and Kitchener serve as a reminder of the complexities and nuances of leadership during times of conflict. This evocative print, "Our Heroes March," encapsulates the spirit and determination of the men who fought in this pivotal war.
