Born in Nantes, France, Lamennais initially pursued a career in the Catholic Church, becoming a priest in 1807. However, his religious convictions evolved, leading him to challenge the established Church hierarchy and advocate for reform. In the early 1820s, Lamennais founded the "Association of the Friends of Religion and of the Faith," which sought to promote a more democratic and socially engaged form of Catholicism.
