The Ice Hole Clam Spearer by Heath Robinson

An ingenious, though perhaps rather complicated device to catch clams through ice in the frozen north, part of a series of drawings in the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News entitled, Very Patent Aides to Sport. A piece of toast tempts an underwater clam, who, the moment it attempts to take a bite will have triggered a string, which sounds a bell which in turn alerts the hunter to cut another string and send a spear diving down to kill its prey. Date: 1928

EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing and humorous illustration by Heath Robinson, titled "The Ice Hole Clam Spearer," showcases an ingenious contraption designed for catching clams through the ice in the frozen north. Part of a series of drawings in the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, this patent aid to sport is a testament to the lengths people will go to in pursuit of their favorite pastimes. The contraption consists of a piece of toast suspended over a hole in the ice, with a string attached to it. An underwater clam, enticed by the toast, takes a bite, triggering the string to sound a bell. The hunter, alerted by the bell, cuts another string, sending a spear diving down to kill its prey. The machine's convoluted design is a perfect example of Robinson's knack for creating complicated and amusing inventions. This cartoon, published in 1928, is a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the ingenuity and sense of humor of the time. The Ice Hole Clam Spearer is a reminder that even in the coldest and most inhospitable environments, humans will find ways to catch their dinner with a touch of whimsy and invention. Robinson's illustration is a delightful addition to any collection of historical cartoons or fishing memorabilia.
