EDITORS COMMENTS
Isabella II of Spain (1830-1904), also known as Isabella II of Bourbon, was a significant figure in Spanish history who reigned as Queen of Spain from 1833 to 1868. After being deposed and going into exile, she spent over a decade in France and England before making her way back to Spain in 1879. In this engraving by Rico, published in The Spanish and American Illustration in 1879, we see the momentous arrival of Queen Isabella II at the station of Irun in the Basque Country. The image captures the excitement and anticipation of the crowd as they gather to welcome the Queen back to her homeland. Isabella II, dressed in a elegant gown and wearing a crown, stands on the platform, surrounded by a group of men in military uniforms and other dignitaries. A young child, possibly a member of the royal family, looks on curiously from the interior of the train. The Spanish and American Illustration was a popular publication that showcased contemporary events and figures from both Spain and the Americas. This engraving, which is colored, provides a vivid and detailed account of the Queen's return to Spain after many years in exile. The train, a symbol of modern transportation, is an important element of the image, reflecting the changing times and the progress of technology. The Basque Country, with its unique culture and language, holds a special place in Spanish history and is represented here by the flags and people in traditional Basque attire. The multitude of people in the image underscores the significance of the Queen's return and the excitement it generated among the Spanish people.
