EDITORS COMMENTS
Isabella II of Spain (1830-1904), also known as "Isabel la Católica" or "Isabella the Catholic," made her triumphant return to Madrid on October 13, 1876, after more than 20 years of exile. The daughter of Ferdinand VII and Maria Cristina of the Two Sicilies, Isabella had been deposed in 1868 following the Revolution of 1868, which led to the establishment of the First Spanish Republic. In this engraving by Capuz, published in The Spanish and American Illustration in 1876, we see the Queen Mother, Isabella of Bourbon, making her way through the streets of Madrid in a grand carriage, accompanied by her son, Alfonso XII, and other members of the royal family. The crowd, a mix of men and women, children and adults, eagerly line the streets to catch a glimpse of their monarch, who had been exiled to France since her deposition. The scene is filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation, as the people of Madrid welcome their beloved Queen back to their city. Horses and other animals can be seen in the background, adding to the bustling, contemporary atmosphere of the image. The Queen, dressed in elegant royal attire, looks regal and poised, while her son, Alfonso, gazes out at the crowd with a sense of pride and determination. The engraving, which has been beautifully colored, provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the pomp and ceremony of the Spanish monarchy during the late 19th century. It serves as a reminder of the enduring power of the monarchy, even in the face of political upheaval and exile.
