1617 1660 Bored Branded Hours Iron Pillory Quaker Spends Tongue Westminster Whipped Blasphemer

EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image depicts James Nayler, a prominent Quaker leader, enduring a harrowing punishment in 17th century England. Dating back to around 1656, some twenty years after Nayler's controversial actions, this print serves as a stark reminder of the religious intolerance and persecution that marked this period. James Nayler, born around 1617, was a Quaker preacher known for his charismatic and unconventional religious practices. In 1656, he made headlines when he rode into Bristol on a horse, claiming to be the "King of Saints and Sinners," an act that was perceived as blasphemous by the authorities. Consequently, Nayler was arrested and brought to trial in London. The punishment meted out to Nayler was severe. He was sentenced to two hours in the Westminster pillory, where he was pelted with rotten vegetables and other projectiles. Following this, he was whipped through the streets of London, an agonizing ordeal that left him severely injured. To further humiliate and punish him, his tongue was bored with a red-hot iron and he was branded with the letter 'B' for blasphemer. This print, which captures the aftermath of Nayler's punishment, is a poignant reminder of the price paid by those who dared to challenge the religious orthodoxy of their time. It stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of the Quakers, who continued to practice their faith in the face of persecution and adversity.
