EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, published by F. G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830, showcases the powerful jaw of a Mosasaurus, an extinct aquatic reptile, discovered in Maastricht. The Mosasaurus, a member of the Mosasauridae family, is recognized as one of the largest and most well-known mosasaur genera. This prehistoric creature, measuring up to 18 meters in length, was a formidable carnivore, with a body shape resembling that of a lizard. The intricately detailed illustration, directed by Turpin and engraved by Massard, with the painting by J.G. Pretre, depicts the Mosasaurus's jaw filled with fossilized teeth, each one sharp and menacing. The engraving also includes various unknown fish fossils, adding to the prehistoric scene. J.G. Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, created this artwork. Later, he became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving is a testament to the scientific curiosity and advancements of the time, as the study and documentation of fossils became increasingly important in understanding the natural world. This image, taken from Jean Gabriel Pretre's work in Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles, stands as a reminder of the rich history of paleontology and the awe-inspiring discoveries that continue to shape our understanding of the planet's past.
