John Gay: A Literary Genius of the Eighteenth Century This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic figure of John Gay (1685-1732), an influential English writer and poet of the early eighteenth century. Born in Barnstaple, Devon, Gay rose to prominence as a playwright and librettist, leaving an indelible mark on the literary landscape of his time. Gay's literary career began in earnest in the early 1710s, when he collaborated with William Congreve and John Dryden on the revival of the Doric Mask at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane. His first major success came with the production of his ballad opera "Polly," which premiered in 1726.
