John Hewson, also known as Gucht, was a humble shoemaker from England who defied the odds and rose to the ranks of a general in the formidable army of Oliver Cromwell during the English Civil War. Born into obscurity, Hewson's life took a dramatic turn when he joined the New Model Army in 1645, demonstrating exceptional leadership qualities and battle prowess. As Cromwell's star continued to rise, so did Hewson's. He played a pivotal role in several key victories, including the Battle of Naseby in 1645, which marked a turning point in the war. However, Hewson's loyalty to the Puritan cause did not go unnoticed by the monarchy, which was determined to restore the Stuart dynasty. When the monarchy was eventually restored in 1660, Hewson, like many other regicides, faced the threat of persecution. He went into hiding, managing to evade capture for several years. However, his luck ran out in 1662 when he was betrayed and arrested. He was tried and sentenced to death for his role in the regicide of King Charles I. Despite the grim outcome, Hewson's story is a testament to the power of determination and the unexpected twists and turns that life can take.
