1645 1714 Archbishop Sharp

EDITORS COMMENTS
John Sharp (1645-1714), Archbishop of York: A Historical Portrait This evocative photograph print depicts John Sharp, an influential figure in English history as the Archbishop of York from 1687 until his death in 1714. Born in London, Sharp initially pursued a career in law before turning to the church. He rose through the ranks to become a chaplain to King Charles II and eventually the Archbishop of York, a position he held for over 27 years. During his tenure as Archbishop, Sharp was known for his efforts to improve the education and living conditions of the clergy in his diocese. He established a number of schools and charities, and oversaw the construction of several new churches and church buildings. Sharp was also a strong advocate for the rights of the Church of England during a time of religious turmoil in England. Despite his accomplishments, Sharp's life was not without controversy. He was a close ally of King James II, who was known for his Catholic sympathies, and was therefore viewed with suspicion by many Protestants. When James II was deposed in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, Sharp was forced to flee England and spent several years in exile in France. He returned to England in 1697, after the accession of the Protestant William III and Mary II, and was eventually reinstated as Archbishop of York. This photograph print captures the somber and reflective expression on Sharp's face, perhaps a testament to the challenges and complexities of his life and career. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the rich history and complexities of English religious history, and the enduring influence of its leaders.
