EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate engraving depicts the Le Nebuleux, or Clouded, Bird of Paradise, Paradisea nigricans. Named by the French naturalist Francois Levaillant in 1801 for its distinctive cloudy white feathers, this bird of paradise is a native of New Guinea and the surrounding islands. The Le Nebuleux is described by Richard Polydore Verreaux and Jacques Bernard Hombron in their work "Histoire naturelle des oiseaux de paradis," published in 1821, as an ally of the Twelve-wired Bird of Paradise, Seleucidis melanoleucus. The two species are often found in the same habitats and share some similarities in their appearance. This stunning illustration was created by Jacques Barraband, based on a live observation, and was published in Francois Levaillant's "Histoire naturelle des oiseaux de paradis" in 1801. It was later reproduced in George Shaw and Frederick Nodder's "The Naturalist's Miscellany" in 1812. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of the engraving showcase the beauty and uniqueness of this fascinating bird of paradise. The Le Nebuleux Bird of Paradise is known for its elaborate courtship displays, which involve raising and spreading its wings to reveal the iridescent blue and green feathers hidden beneath the white plumage. This display is intended to attract females during the breeding season. This historical image provides a glimpse into the rich natural history of the bird of paradise family and the dedication of naturalists and illustrators to documenting the natural world.
