EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 14th century Linear Gothic print depicts a priory chair from the Monastery of Santa Maria de Sigena in Huesca, Aragon, Spain. The chair, which dates back to around 1322, was commissioned for Blanche of Aragon and Anjou, a noblewoman who became a nun and prioress at the monastery. The intricately carved arms of the chair showcase two prominent saints of the Christian faith: St. Catherine of Alexandria and St. Agnes. St. Catherine, depicted on the left, is shown breaking the wheel, an allusion to the legendary tale of her martyrdom. The wheel, a common instrument of torture during the Roman Empire, was said to have miraculously shattered when Catherine touched it, sparing her life. Surrounding her image, an aureole or halo glows with a golden aura, signifying her sainthood. On the right, St. Agnes, a young virgin and martyr, is shown with a palm branch, symbolizing her martyrdom and her entry into heaven. The polychrome woodwork, a characteristic feature of Linear Gothic art, adds depth and richness to the piece. This exquisite chair is a testament to the artistic and religious traditions of medieval Spain during the Middle Ages. It is now housed in the Diocesan and Regional Museum of Lleida in Catalonia, where it continues to captivate visitors with its intricate details and historical significance.
