EDITORS COMMENTS

In this rare and captivating photograph from the 1890s, we find ourselves at the Metropolitan Fire Brigade Headquarters in Southwark, SE1, where an eagerly anticipated royal visit is about to take place. The Chief Officer of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, Captain Eyre Massey Shaw, stands proudly at the entrance, surrounded by his officers and men from the headquarters station. The occasion is significant, as Captain Shaw, a favorite of the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VII), is about to greet the royal party. Captain Shaw's tenure with the MFB came to an end on 1 November 1891, following a severe disagreement with the London County Council regarding the management of the Fire Brigade. Despite this, the Prince of Wales saw fit to knight him upon his retirement, bestowing upon him the title of Knight Commander of the Bath (KCB). The image captures the essence of a special moment in time, with the dignified Captain Shaw, resplendent in his uniform, waiting to welcome the esteemed royal guests. The officers and men behind him stand at attention, their expressions a mix of anticipation and pride. The sepia tone of the photograph adds to the vintage charm, transporting us back to the Victorian era and the grandeur of a royal visit. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of the London Fire Brigade and the important role that its personnel played in the community during the late 19th century. The annual displays of firefighting prowess and the visits from dignitaries and royalty were significant events in the lives of the firefighters, and this photograph offers a unique glimpse into that world.
