EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor artwork by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans, featured in Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand" Vol.1, captures the beauty and intricacy of two native New Zealand birds: the Long-tailed Cuckoo and the Grey Warbler. The Long-tailed Cuckoo (Koekoea taitensis) is depicted in its adult form on the left side of the plate. With its glossy black plumage, long, graduated tail feathers, and distinctive white wing patches, this cuckoo is a striking and distinctive bird. The Long-tailed Cuckoo is a brood parasite, laying its eggs in the nests of other birds, primarily the Shining Cuckoo and the Fantail. On the right side of the plate, the Grey Warbler (Riroriro) is shown as a young bird. The Grey Warbler is a small, agile passerine with a distinctive grey-brown plumage, long, curved bill, and a distinctive, melodic song. This bird is a resident of New Zealand forests and is known for its ability to mimic the calls of other birds and even the sounds of running water. Keulemans' meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate feather patterns and textures of both birds, as well as the lifelike portrayal of their expressions and postures. This artwork is a testament to the natural beauty and diversity of New Zealand's avian fauna, and a valuable historical record of these birds for future generations to appreciate.
