1857 Baron Courtier Depicted Foxhunter Luke 1922

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Luke White, the third Baron Annaly of Annaly, in the prime of his life as he engages in his beloved pastime of fox hunting. Born in 1857, Luke White was the eldest son of the second Baron Annaly and succeeded to the title in 1885 following the death of his father. He was an accomplished soldier, courtier, and foxhunter, reflecting the diverse interests and responsibilities of the British aristocracy during the early 20th century. Luke White's military career began in the Royal Horse Guards, where he rose to the rank of Major. He later served in the Second Boer War and was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with four clasps. As a courtier, he was a frequent attendee of royal events and functions, representing his family and the peerage at the highest levels of society. However, it was as a foxhunter that Luke White truly distinguished himself. He was a passionate and skilled huntsman, known for his expertise in the art of fox hunting. The photograph captures him in the midst of a hunt, dressed in the traditional red coat and black velvet hat of the hunt, with his hounds at his side and a determined expression on his face. The image is a testament to the enduring appeal of this ancient sport and the role it played in the lives of the British aristocracy. Luke White's life came to an end in 1922, but his legacy as a soldier, courtier, and foxhunter continues to be celebrated in the annals of Irish and British history. This photograph offers a glimpse into a bygone era, capturing the essence of a man who embodied the spirit of the landed gentry and the traditions of the hunt.
