EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts three fascinating reptiles native to the tropical regions of Africa: the Lyreshead Lizard (Lyriocephalus scutatus), the Brown Tree Climber (Uranoscodon superciliosus), and the Hippolyte Cloquet's Chameleon (Hippolyta cloqueti). The image is taken from the prestigious 'Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles' published by F.G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830. The Lyreshead Lizard, also known as the Harp-tailed Gecko, is shown in its characteristic pose with its long, lyre-shaped tail curled up above its body. This lizard is well adapted to its arboreal lifestyle, with strong limbs and a prehensile tail that allow it to climb trees with ease. Its coloration is a mottled brown, providing excellent camouflage against the bark of trees. The Brown Tree Climber, or Uranoscopus superciliosus, is another agile arboreal reptile, with a slender body and long, powerful limbs. Its coloration is a uniform brown, with a distinctive white line running from the corner of each eye to the angle of the jaw. This reptile is a skilled climber, able to move quickly and quietly through the forest canopy. The Hippolyte Cloquet's Chameleon, or Hippolyta cloqueti, is a small, colorful chameleon with a distinctive crest running along its spine. This chameleon is native to Madagascar and is well known for its ability to change color to blend in with its surroundings. Its diet consists mainly of insects, which it captures with its long, sticky tongue. This stunning engraving was produced by the skilled hands of Jean Gabriel Pretre, who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was executed by Massard, under the direction of Turpin. The intricate stipple technique used in the engraving adds depth and texture to the image, bringing these fascinating reptiles to life in a way that was not possible with earlier painting techniques.
