EDITORS COMMENTS
This Neo-Babylonian print showcases the Ishtar Gate, one of the eight gates of the inner wall of ancient Babylon, built in the year 575 BC during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II. The gate, dedicated to the Babylonian goddess Ishtar, was constructed using glazed blue brick with alternating rows of bas-relief, featuring dragons known as mushussu or sirrush, and aurochs. The aurochs, an extinct species of large wild ox, is depicted above a flower ribbon in this image. Originally located in Babylon, modern-day Iraq, the Ishtar Gate was rebuilt and is now housed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany. The intricate bas-relief on the gate showcases mythological creatures and animals in motion, reflecting the vibrant Mesopotamian mythology and the grandeur of the Neo-Babylonian Empire. The aurochs, a symbol of strength and power, is depicted in a graceful walking position, with its massive body and powerful muscles on full display. The use of glazed blue brick adds an element of elegance and beauty to the otherwise imposing structure. The Ishtar Gate stands as a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of ancient Mesopotamia, and continues to captivate and inspire visitors to this day.
