EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant photograph from 1934, Mrs and Mrs Sweeny, Charles and Margaret, are seen enjoying an evening at an Ascot house party hosted by Mr and Mrs William Garthwaite. The Old Malt House in Bracknell was the setting for this glamorous social event, where society's elite gathered to celebrate and mingle. Mrs Sweeny, formerly known as Miss Margaret Whigham, would later become the Duchess of Argyll, making this an especially notable occasion. She is pictured here in the company of some of the most prominent personalities of the time. To her left is the Hon. Mrs Ian Macalpine, elder daughter of Lord Bethell. Next is the Hon. Mrs Edward Barford, the daughter of Lord Ashfield. The hostess, Lady Duveen, the only daughter of Lord Duveen, is seen in the background, graciously welcoming her guests. Her husband, the host, Mr Edward Barford, is also present, standing next to his wife. The 1930s were a time of opulence and grandeur, and this photograph captures the essence of the era. The group's refined attire and the elegant decor of the Old Malt House transport us back to a bygone era, where society's elite came together to celebrate life's most joyous moments. This image is a testament to the rich history and fascinating personalities that shaped society during the thirties.
