EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking oil painting depicts Colonel Henry O'Hara (d. 1745), an Irish military officer who rose to prominence during the War of the Austrian Succession. The portrait, attributed to the English artist Francis Bindon (c. 1690-1765), captures O'Hara in the prime of his military career. Dressed in the uniform of a British colonel, complete with a sash and feathered tricorn hat, O'Hara exudes confidence and authority. His piercing gaze and strong jawline convey a sense of determination and resolve. The painting, dated circa 1725-35, is a testament to the artistic skill of Francis Bindon, who was known for his ability to capture the likenesses of his subjects with great accuracy. Bindon's use of light and shadow adds depth and texture to the painting, bringing O'Hara's features to life. Colonel Henry O'Hara was born in County Limerick, Ireland, and joined the British Army at a young age. He saw action in several campaigns during the War of the Spanish Succession and rose through the ranks to become a colonel in the British Army. He was killed in action at the Battle of Dettingen in 1743, at the age of around 19 years old. This painting is an important historical document, providing a visual record of a significant military figure from the early 18th century. It is a reminder of the complex political landscape of Europe during this period and the role that Irish soldiers played in shaping the continent's history.
