101st Airborne Division Memorial Parachute, Paulushoeve

This area was in the landing zone of the Screaming Eagles, the 101st US Airborne Division, and was known as DZ C. It was where the 506th PIR were due to land. The house in whose garden the metal parachute Memorial stands, was used as an identification point for the paratroopers and gliders because the name of the farm was written on the roof of the house. Liza van Overveld who lived in a nearby house and was 14 years old at the time, watched both paratroopers and gliders land and met the Americans face to face. She said that the soldiers were anxious to get on but that they had lost their awareness of direction. Most of them had a map and compass but they were on strange territory full of enemies. Date: 2001

101st 2001 Airborne Area Division Eagles Landing Parachute Screaming This Zone

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the 101st Airborne Division Memorial Parachute, located in Paulushoeve, Netherlands. The landing zone of the renowned "Screaming Eagles" was designated as DZ C, where the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment (506th PIR) was scheduled to descend. The metal parachute memorial stands proudly in the garden of a house that served as a crucial identification point for the paratroopers and gliders during the operation. The name of the farm was clearly visible on the roof, providing much-needed orientation for the soldiers as they prepared to land. The year was 1944, and Liza van Overveld, a 14-year-old resident of a nearby house, watched in awe as both paratroopers and gliders touched down in the area. She recalled the soldiers' anxious eagerness to advance but their disorientation due to the unfamiliar terrain and the presence of enemy forces. Most of the soldiers carried maps and compasses, but their effectiveness was limited in this strange new environment. This poignant image serves as a testament to the bravery and determination of the 101st Airborne Division during their historic mission in 2001. The memorial parachute remains a symbol of the courage and resilience of the soldiers who landed in Paulushoeve, and their significant role in the Allied victory in World War II.
