EDITORS COMMENTS
Aerides lawrenceae, also known as the Ladies' Slipper Orchid, is a rare and endangered beauty that once graced Victorian greenhouses and gardens. This exquisite orchid is depicted in this charming chromolithograph from Edward Stepp's "Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse," published by Frederick Warne in London in 1896. The illustration, by B. Herincq, captures the essence of this enchanting plant with its delicately painted petals, resembling the elegant slippers of a lady, and its distinctive labellum, shaped like a pouch, reminiscent of the Paphiopedilum or Lady's Slipper Orchid, and the Cypripedium or Lady's Slipper. The Aerides lawrenceae is native to the Philippines and is now classified as endangered due to habitat loss and over-collection for the horticultural trade. In the late 19th century, however, it was a sought-after addition to the collections of Victorian horticulturists, who took great pride in cultivating rare and exotic plants. This beautiful orchid, with its insignia of desire and allure, adds an air of elegance and sophistication to any Victorian garden or greenhouse. Its rarity and endangered status only add to its allure, making it a true treasure for botanical enthusiasts and collectors alike.
