EDITORS COMMENTS
This beautiful chromolithograph depicts an American Kestrel, Falco sparverius, proudly perched on its nest, guarding its freshly laid egg. The American Kestrel is the smallest falcon in North America and is easily identified by its distinctive slate-gray back and rufous wings. This image, taken from Thomas George Gentry's "Nests and Eggs of the Birds of the United States," published by J.A. Wagenseller in Philadelphia in 1881, was illustrated by Edwin Sheppard. The intricate details of the kestrel's plumage and the delicate texture of the nest are beautifully captured in this lithograph. The American Kestrel is a solitary bird of prey that nests in open habitats such as fields, meadows, and grasslands. They are often found near human habitation and are adaptable to various nesting sites, including abandoned woodpecker holes, old squirrel nests, and even man-made structures. In this image, we see a pair of American Kestrels, with the female, slightly smaller than the male, bringing building materials to the nest. The American Kestrel's diet consists mainly of insects, rodents, and reptiles. They are agile hunters and can hover in mid-air like a hummingbird, making them an effective predator. This image captures the intensity and focus of the kestrel as it protects its precious offspring from potential threats. The nest is surrounded by various other birds, including a Gray Catbird, Dumetella carolinensis, an Eastern Towhee, Pipilo erythrophthalmus, and a Bunting. These birds are common inhabitants of the same habitats as the American Kestrel and add to the rich biodiversity of North American grasslands.
