This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving is a beautiful representation of American Mahogany, Swietenia mahagoni, also known as Cuban Mahogany. The image is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi, under the direction of the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). American Mahogany is a critically endangered species of mahogany, which is native to the Caribbean and Central America. It is known for its rich, red-brown color and fine, straight grain, making it a highly prized wood for furniture and cabinetry. The tree can grow up to 100 feet tall and produces small, white flowers that give way to red, round fruits, which contain a single seed. The seeds are edible and have a nutty, sweet taste, similar to cloves or allspice. The tree is also known by other names, including Swietenia mahagoni, Mahogany, Magogano d'America, and Garofano Aromatico. Turpin is considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century, and his work is renowned for its accuracy and beauty.
