EDITORS COMMENTS
Antoine de Croy, Comte de Porcéan (1390-1475): A Noble Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece This stunning chromolithograph depicts Antoine de Croy, Comte de Porcéan (1390-1475), a prominent nobleman of the late Middle Ages. The image is taken from Loredan Larchey's Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th Century, published in Paris in 1890. The illustration is derived from manuscript 4790 in the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal. Antoine de Croy was a Flemish knight who rose to prominence under the Burgundian rulers Philip the Good and Charles the Bold. He was a member of the powerful House of Croÿ, which held significant influence in the political and military spheres of the Burgundian court. In this image, Antoine de Croy is depicted in full armor, seated on a horse, and holding a lance in his right hand. The golden fleece emblem, a symbol of the Order of the Golden Fleece, is prominently displayed on his shield and surcoat. The Order of the Golden Fleece was a prestigious chivalric order founded by Philip the Good in 1430. The order was named after the legend of Jason and the Golden Fleece and was meant to promote chivalry, loyalty, and unity among the nobility. Antoine de Croy was inducted into the order in 1431, and this image serves as a testament to his noble status and membership in this esteemed organization. The intricate details of the armor, the realistic depiction of the horse, and the rich colors of the image make this chromolithograph a beautiful and historically significant representation of a noble knight of the late Middle Ages.
