EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Antoine de Vergy, Comte de Dammartin (d. 1439): A Nobleman of the Late Middle Ages" Antoine de Vergy, Comte de Dammartin (d. 1439), is depicted in this exquisite handcoloured lithograph by Leopold Massard. The portrait, based on an original from Roger de Gaignières portfolio VI 150, is part of the extensive collection "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Paul Lacroix, published in Paris in 1852 by the Administration de Librairie. Antoine de Vergy was a significant figure in the late Middle Ages, serving as a loyal soldier, diplomat, and statesman for the French monarchy. He was born around 1394 and died on July 26, 1439. His noble lineage can be traced back to the House of Vergy, one of the most influential families in Burgundy during the 15th century. In this portrait, Antoine de Vergy is shown wearing the elegant attire of a high-ranking nobleman. His richly decorated surcoat, emblazoned with the family arms, is worn over a gilded doublet and hose. A fur-trimmed mantle draped over his shoulders adds an air of grandeur and warmth. The intricate details of his costume, from the embroidered cuffs to the ornate belt, reflect the opulence and sophistication of the late medieval period. Antoine de Vergy's expression is serious yet calm, suggesting a man of great wisdom and experience. His piercing gaze and well-groomed appearance further emphasize his noble status and refinement. The portrait offers a glimpse into the world of the French nobility during the late Middle Ages, a time of political intrigue, artistic innovation, and cultural flourishing. This stunning handcoloured lithograph is a testament to the enduring allure of historical portraiture and the importance of preserving the rich heritage of European art and culture. It invites us to explore the lives and stories of the fascinating individuals who shaped the course of history.
