EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1823, showcases an enchanting assembly of African antelopes. The image features five distinct species, each gracefully depicted in their natural habitat. In the foreground, the Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx 1) stands proudly with its distinctive white coat and long, slender horns. To its left, the grey rhebuck (Pelea capreolus 2) blends seamlessly into the foliage, its coat providing excellent camouflage. The springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis 3), with its unique jumping ability, is shown in mid-leap, showcasing its agility and elegance. Three extinct antelope species are also represented in this enchanting scene. The extinct bluebuck (Hippotragus leucophaeus 4) is depicted with a striking blue coat, while the extinct blue antelope (Hippotragus euchora) is shown with a coat adorned with blue spots. The extinct Arundinacea antelope (Hippotragus arundinaceus) is illustrated with a brown coat and spiraled horns. In the background, the roan antelope (Hippotragus equinus) can be seen, its striking roan coat providing a beautiful contrast to the lush African savannah. This stunning engraving not only showcases the natural beauty of these magnificent creatures but also serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect endangered species and preserve their habitats.
