EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning lithograph by Karl Joseph Brodtmann, from Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals published in 1836, captures the majesty of two of the most iconic large herbivores that have roamed the Earth: the extinct Aurochs (Bos primigenius) and the American Bison, also known as the American Buffalo or simply Buffalo (Bison bison). The Aurochs, the ancestor of all domestic cattle, once inhabited Europe, North Africa, and Asia. They were large, powerful animals, with massive bodies and large, spiraled horns that could reach up to 2 meters in length. Aurochs were an essential part of the European ecosystem, shaping the landscape through their grazing habits and providing food and resources for humans. However, due to habitat loss, hunting, and competition with domestic cattle, the last known Auroch died in Poland in 1627. The American Bison, on the other hand, is the largest living land animal in North America. They were once abundant on the Great Plains, numbering in the millions. These animals, also known as buffalo, were essential to the cultures and economies of Native American tribes, who hunted them for food, shelter, and clothing. However, due to overhunting and habitat loss, their population declined dramatically, and they were on the brink of extinction by the late 19th century. Conservation efforts have helped their numbers recover, and today, they can be found in various protected areas across North America. This beautiful lithograph not only serves as a reminder of the majesty of these animals but also highlights the importance of conservation efforts to protect endangered species and preserve biodiversity. The contrast between the Aurochs, an extinct species, and the American Bison, a species that has been saved from the brink of extinction, underscores the need for continued efforts to protect and conserve the natural world.
